Los Angeles MC and producer RE4M (formerly known as Skillborn) has deconstructed hip-hop with his debut album Wordseye, a sonic manifesto of minimalist beats, heady instrumentals, and restless rhymes that wander through cosmic oblivion. Although a newcomer to the forefront of the underground hip-hop scene, RE4M has been cultivating his craft since 1996.
RE4M’s story begins in a garage in Rowland Heights, free-styling with none other than Gajah and Beond of Acid Reign. Meanwhile, he could be found developing his technique and delivery every week at renowned hip-hop workshop and battlefield, Project Blowed. Since then, he has collaborated with several notable underground artists, having produced tracks for Acid Reign, Myk Mansun, Neila, Jizzm, Express, Slowrider, and DJ ESP.
Fresh off the Nothing to Lose tour--his first ever--that hit the southwestern United States this past July, RE4M had the opportunity to go on the road and share the stage with Acid Reign, as well as Rifleman (HipHopKlan/CVE/Project Blowed) and Self-Jupiter (Freestyle Fellowship/Project Blowed), two legendary artists he holds in high esteem.
Influenced by an eclectic array of musicians including but not limited to Martin Gore of Depeche Mode, Kurt Elling, Radiohead, and Freestyle Fellowship, RE4M says of his music, “I want people to be able to peek into the brain of an average working man who has the ability to paint a picture about life through words or music. It’s my voice, my dreams, my goals…it’s me.” He is currently working on a solo album and has several projects underway with Neila, Express, Acid Reign, and Myk Mansun.
The ascent of the underground has been set in motion--and RE4M is continually proving to be an indispensable and unforgettable element of that resurgence.
