A native of Hawaii, Neila has carried her artistry from North Carolina to Arizona to California. She wrote poetry as a child, but developed a passion for Hip-Hop in North Carolina. After graduating high school, she relocated to Arizona where she was encouraged to put her rhymes to beats by fellow musicians and friends Supermarket, Z-Trip, and Radar—she hasn’t stopped ever since. Neila’s art extends beyond music; she is also an accomplished visual artist and skateboarder. For her, each craft interrelates to one another as different expressions of the same person within different registers of space. When she sits down in front of a blank canvas, she doesn’t know what she’ll paint; she simply paints. Just as when she sits down to write a song, the outcome is always a surprise.
Building on Omid (OD), DNAE, Paris Zax, Deeskee and Old Joseph’s sophisticated and somber production, For Whom the Bells Crow is an almost quiet meditation on the constancy of change and our confrontations with it. The soft jazzy quality of “Leave the Light On” explores love and loneliness in a serenade to the one who she cannot be with. “For Whom the Bells Crow” is a challenge to restore and heal the Wasteland around and within us, while Pigeon John makes an appearance on “Rules”. Ranging from delicate bossa nova beats to violent guitar riffs, For Whom the Bells Crow covers many shades and moods that are neither happy nor sad—but they are hopeful.
So who is Neila? A painter, a skateboarder, a lyricist, a teacher; but most importantly, she is a human being who creates art and music that questions our existing realities.
